Make New Friends

Many students think that it’s easier to make friends at a big university, because there are so many more people to choose from. In fact, the opposite is true. Here at Lake State our Student Life staff is always working hard to provide diverse social opportunities.

Making new friends is an important part of college life. There are many opportunities to become acquainted with people: in class, in the dorms, in clubs and at work. We’ve created a list of ideas on creating relationships with your fellow Lakers:

• Introduce yourself to those in your dorm and class
• Show up early for orientation.
• Attend parties, sports events and special gatherings where people socialize.
• Remain open to new cultures, ideas and values
• Invite people to join you for a bite to eat and a drink.
• Study in groups
• Reach out to others when they need help
• Join a student group or sports team
• Explore the Greek system
• Give people a second chance if they make a bad first impression.
• Let people open up to you slowly. Make sure you are not forcing yourself upon someone.

Lasting friendships are the best thing to take with you besides your degree when you leave LSSU, so if you make the effort, it will really pay off in the long run.
