Lake Superior State University is committed to making individuals with disabilities full participants in it's programs, services and activities.
It is LSSU's policy that no otherwise qualified individual with a disability shall be denied access to, or participation in, any program, service, or activity offered by the university.
LSSU supports equal educational opportunities for all students. Students are entitled to accessible, accommodating, and supportive teaching and learning environments.
Individuals with disabilities have a right to:
- Request accommodations.
- Receive accommodations appropriate to their disability in order to fully participate in, or benefit from, the university's programs, services, and activities in a non-discriminatory, integrated manner.
To develop the necessary accommodations, students must:
- Provide current documentation verifying a disabling condition.
- Register and meet with the Disability Services Coordinator.
Why register for services?
In compliance with Lake Superior State University policy and equal access laws, disability-related accommodations or services are available. Students who desire such services are to meet with the professor in a timely manner, preferably the first week of class, to discuss their disability-related needs. Students will not receive services until they register with the Ability Center for Exceptional Students (ACES). Proper registration will enable ACES to verify the disability and determine reasonable academic accommodations. Disability Services and ACES is located in the KJS Library Room 147 and 149, extension 2355 or 2454.
Students making a successful transition to higher education bring with them:
- The requisite documentation that permits reasonable accommodation,
- A desire to actively participate in the accommodation process,
- And the ability to compete on a playing field made level by those accommodations mandated by law.
Students are encouraged to contact post secondary institutions as early as ninth grade to learn more about admission requirements, disability services and the array of educational opportunities available to them as individuals with disabilities.
NOTE: All documentation is kept in strict confidence by ACES. Upon receipt and evaluation of the documentation, ACES will provide the accommodation information to the faculty and staff involved. It is the responsibility of the faculty, staff and student to work with ACES to make sure all parties needs are addressed. The ACES has a responsibility to maintain confidentiality regarding the student's evaluation and may not release any part of the documentation without the student's informed and written consent. |
